Revisiting the patriarchy

The patriarchy has come to be a system of oppression. It is a larger system that has grown into a convoluted, overbearing shadow in the background: so that people continue to find ways to disregard the claims made and the desire for change expressed. While it is larger than it deservedly should be, it is not as connected as people have made it, which is also the reason it is so difficult to challenge.

On a larger scale, the patriarchy commonly stands as “the natural order” of things and it does hold a strong place for the regulation of daily life. While this may seem like the norm, it is an extension of the larger connections made because of media and communication. There is not one single patriarchy, but many, with their own guidelines and oppressions.

The simple fact is that the common thread of the patriarchy is rooted in the survival of man, which is now something people have the privilege of choosing. Further still, much of human nature includes rebelling towards direct instruction or expectations. Thus, people — commonly women — find themselves trying to create something for their own, free of another person or existing structures. Here and throughout time, freedom for women is consistently their creativity because it is the one thing that measures their value regardless of other people.
